Vitter: House could pass one-week funding bill

{mosads}Vitter said the move would buy Republican leaders time to figure out their next move in the fight to defund ObamaCare.

“I think the House could still have time to send something different back, particularly if they sent along with it, a very short term, like one-week clean [continuing resolution] so there would be no disruption as the longer-term bill was discussed,” Vitter said Wednesday on Fox News.

Vitter floated the idea while defending Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Tex.) marathon speech to delay a vote on the House-passed bill to fund the government.

Some conservatives have said Cruz’s gambit could put Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) in a tough spot by cutting back on the amount of time he has to craft a counter-resolution to the Senate bill, which will likely see a vote on Friday or Saturday.

The government will shut down next Tuesday if Congress fails to pass a spending bill.

Vitter said a one-week continuing resolution would put “more time on the clock” to avoid a shutdown. He said the short-term spending bill would maintain spending levels “without all the controversial stuff,” like defunding President Obama’s healthcare law.
