The New York-based U.S. attorney fired earlier this month by the Trump administration is joining New York University Law School.
Starting on April 1, Preet Bharara will be a distinguished scholar in residence at the elite university, according to a statement released Tuesday.
“I am thrilled for this opportunity to continue addressing the issues I so deeply care about — criminal and social justice, honest government, national security, civil rights, and corporate accountability, to name a few,” Bharara said in the statement.
{mosads}The Trump administration abruptly requested the resignations of 46 Obama-era U.S. attorneys earlier this month. Bharara, the high-profile U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, refused to step down, leading to his firing by the Justice Department.
“I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life,” Bharara wrote on Twitter shortly after he was fired.
Bharara was reportedly asked by Trump and his then-attorney general pick Jeff Sessions in November to remain in his post under Trump. But in an about-face this month, the president cleared house of U.S. attorneys appointed by former President Obama, and Bharara was among them.
Bharara was reportedly investigating Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s investments in health-related companies at the time of his firing.
