Snowe: GOP in ‘state of denial’

The Republican Party is in a “state of denial” about it’s political future, Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) said today.

Snowe said the party refuses to realize it needs moderates like Arlen Specter to regain the majority.

“We have really withdrawn…and moved to the ideological right, and that has contributed to our erosion as a strong national party,” Snowe told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

Snowe urged the GOP to “embrace the situation we’re finding ourselves in” and make room for more centrists. Too many Republicans, she said, think the party can be successful with a solely conservative makeup.

“This state of denial is not helpful nor constructive,” said the Maine Republican.

Snowe wrote an op-ed in the NY Times today making a similar argument.
