Hillary Clinton praised a New York state tuition-free college program on Saturday, calling it “a great step” for the progressive movement.
“Let’s celebrate New York State getting something important done that we wanted to do nationally. A great step for progressives,” she tweeted.

Clinton’s tweet came in reply to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who said that the state “has established a national model” for higher education access.
“With our first-in-the-nation tuition-free college program, New York has established a national model for access to higher education,” he tweeted.
During her presidential campaign, Clinton proposed a plan to eliminate college tuition for most families, something advocated by her Democratic presidential primary rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
The new state program echoes Clinton’s by providing free tuition for State University of New York system for families earning less than $100,000 a year in 2017, increasing it to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019.
Clinton’s plan had similarly called for families making $125,000 or less to pay no tuition at public, in-state universities and colleges.
