Senate Dem calls on Trump to halt deportation of ‘adorable’ child, mother

Sen. Bob Casey on Wednesday urged President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to halt the deportation of a Honduran child and his mother.

“I just found out that a young child & mother who came to U.S. seeking refuge will be sent back to Honduras today,” the Pennsylvania Democrat tweeted.

“This mother & child are being held at a facility in Berks county & are being sent into danger despite the child being eligible for relief,” he added.

Casey proceeded to tell the story of the family while urging his followers to tweet at the DHS and “tell them to protect this mother and child” being held in his state.

“I just had a picture of this 5yr old come across my desk. He’s adorable and wrote that he had ‘nowhere to go,'” he tweeted.

“I’ve just placed a call to [Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly] telling him to stop this. I need you to tweet @DHSgov & tell them to protect this mother and child,” the lawmaker continued.

“What I won’t do: stand by silently as a vulnerable child and his mother are sent to their possible death.”

Casey later tweeted that he spoke with White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, who told him that the administration is “looking into it.”

“Just got off the phone with @Reince45, he promised that they are looking into it. I’ll hold him accountable to do the right thing,” he said.

A spokesman for Casey told The Hill that the family pose “no threat” to the community, pointing to a letter he and several other Democratic lawmakers sent to Kelly on Tuesday that highlighted similar cases of mothers and children who “fled the most dangerous areas in the world to seek refuge.
