The City of New Orleans on Wednesday took down a Confederate monument of Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, the third statue the city has taken down.
Crew workers removed the statue shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday and protesters both for and against its removal gathered at the site, CNN reported.
New Orleans plans to remove a fourth monument soon, The Associated Press reported.
{mosads}“Today we take another step in defining our City not by our past but by our bright future,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) said in a news release.
“While we must honor our history, we will not allow the Confederacy to be put on a pedestal in the heart of New Orleans.”
Last week, the city removed a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
New Orleans is still planning to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
City officials say the monuments don’t “appropriately reflect the values of diversity and inclusion that make New Orleans strong today.”
Fights in state and federal court have delayed the monuments’ removal for months.
