Clinton compares Trump to Nixon, saying presidency ‘would eventually end in disgrace’

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton delivered a subtle jab at President Trump’s ongoing conflict with the Justice Department during a commencement speech at Wellesley College on Friday by drawing a comparison between him and former President Nixon. 

“We were furious about the past presidential election of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice,” she said, pausing for the crowd’s laughter before clarifying she was speaking about Nixon: “After firing the person heading the investigation into him at the Department of Justice.”

Speaking at her alma mater, Clinton was referencing the ongoing FBI investigation into alleged ties between members of Trump’s campaign and Russians that attempted to hack the U.S. presidential election. Earlier in the month, Trump fired James Comey, who was leading the investigation. The DOJ has since appointed a special prosecutor to lead the ongoing investigation into Russian influence on the election as well as possible Trump connections.

In 1973, Nixon ordered the attorney general to fire a special prosecutor who was looking into taped conversations recorded in the Oval Office as part of the Watergate scandal. Nixon would eventually resign as president when faced with likely impeachment for his actions, including abusing his executive power in seeking to influence the DOJ.

Clinton concluded the comparison on a hopeful note.

“Here’s a what I want you to know. We got through that tumultuous time and once again we began to thrive as out society changed laws,” she said about the aftermath of the Nixon White House.
