Merkel ‘disappointed’ in Trump’s withdrawal from Paris agreement

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday vowed to keep working to “save our Earth,” after President Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, tweeted Thursday that Merkel is “disappointed” in Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement. “Now more than ever we will work for global climate policies that save our planet,” he wrote.

{mosads}Merkel previously said that there was an “intense” conversation among world leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit earlier this month where the six leaders “made it clear that we want the U.S. to stick to its commitments.”

After the summit, she said that Germany could no longer “completely depend” on the U.S. as a full partner and called climate talks with Trump “unsatisfying.”

Social Democratic members of Merkel’s Cabinet said in a joint statement that “the United States is harming itself, us Europeans and all other people in the world,” but that they would “keep the door open” for the U.S. to return to the deal, The Associated Press reported.

The European Union’s top climate action leader, Miguel Arias Cañete, said in a statement that it is “a sad day for the global community,” but that the world could “count on Europe for global leadership in the fight against climate change.”
