Former President Jimmy Carter said he will attend music legend Gregg Allman’s funeral this Saturday in Macon, Ga.
“Rosalynn and I were deeply saddened when we learned that Gregg Allman had passed,” Carter told The Telegraph in an emailed statement Friday. [I’m going] to show my respect and concern.”
Carter, who was Georgia’s Democratic governor in the 1970s, added that Allman helped him fundraise money for his 1976 presidential run, joking that back then, “Allman was better known than I was.”
{mosads}Allman’s representative confirmed to Rolling Stone that The Allman Brothers Band co-founder had died last Saturday at age 69 of complications from liver cancer.
“Gregg Allman was there when I needed him, and Rosalynn and I have always been grateful to him,” Carter added of Allman. “At many concerts the Allman Brothers Band held for me, the people who attended would donate the ticket price to the campaign and then the federal government matched the amount.”
The Telegraph reported that private services for Allman are set for 1 p.m. this Saturday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Cherry Street in downtown Macon.
