Conway dodges on existence of Trump-Comey ‘tapes’

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Thursday dodged questions about the existence of possible recordings of conversations between President Trump and former FBI Director James Comey.

“I can’t comment on that,” Conway said on Fox News before moving to discuss other portions of Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier in the day.

Pressed twice more about the existence of possible tapes, Conway responded, “I can’t comment on that and actually the president himself has said he won’t comment any further on that.”

{mosads}Conway declined to comment after Comey testified before lawmakers earlier in the day: “I’ve seen the tweet about tapes. Lordy, I hope there are tapes.”

The former FBI director was referring to the cryptic message posted days after his firing in early May in which Trump wrote, “Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

Comey cited the tweet in explaining his decision to disclose contents of a memo he prepared at the time on one of his conversations with Trump that he said bothered him. During that conversation, Comey says the president told him he hoped the FBI chief would let go of the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

“Again, maybe other people would be stronger in that circumstance. That’s how I conducted myself,” Comey explained when pressed about his interaction with Trump. “I hope I never have another opportunity, maybe if I did it again I would do it better.”
