Sanders’s campaign says it ‘never interacted’ with shooter

A representative from Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) presidential campaign said it “never interacted” with a former volunteer who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and others at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday.

“Our computer records show that he volunteered for one debate watch party in Iowa. He was not on the payroll. We never interacted with him,” Michael Briggs, who was a spokesman for the Sanders campaign, told a Des Moines, Iowa, TV station.

The alleged gunman has been identified in several reports as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill.

Sanders condemned the shooting on the Senate floor, saying it “sickened” him.

“I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign,” the Vermont senator said.

“I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be: Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms,” Sanders added.
