Dem rep. compares Trump to Nixon: ‘We’re watching history repeat itself’

California Rep. Ted Lieu (D) drew comparisons between President Trump and former President Richard Nixon on Saturday, saying that history is repeating itself as Trump takes actions reminiscent of Watergate.

“This week is the 45th anniversary of Watergate and we’re watching history repeat itself,” Lieu told CNN anchor Ana Cabrera on Saturday. “Nixon ignored his advisers and went into full attack mode, attacking his own Department of Justice and saying the press is the enemy of the people. We see Trump doing something similar.”

“[Trump] fired the former FBI Director, he’s looking at firing the special counsel, he’s now attacking Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and he’s called the press the enemy of the people,” Lieu continued. “But the lesson from Watergate is that no one is above the law, not even a president.”

Lieu has been an outspoken critic of Trump since his inauguration, gaining traction on social media for his comments about the administration.

On Friday, Lieu said that Congress would “begin impeachment proceedings” against Trump if he decides to fire special counsel Robert Mueller or Rosenstein.

Speculation around such firings has been swirling over the last week amid reports that the president is unhappy with both Rosenstein and Mueller. 

The president’s abrupt firing of former FBI Director James Comey shook Washington D.C. and led to the appointment of Mueller. According to multiple reports, Trump is now under investigation for obstruction of justice following the firing.
