NY Gov. Cuomo launches voter registration drive at state Pride march

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and the New York Democratic Party will begin a summer-long voter registration effort at the Pride march in Albany on Sunday, NY Daily News reports.

The governor began the “New York Fights Back” campaign earlier this month to target the seats of six New York House Republicans. The campaign will also take on the new Senate GOP healthcare bill, which Cuomo called “even worse than we imagined” in an email to supporters.

“New York Fights Back” will include voter registration drives in the districts of each of the House Republicans and several key urban areas in the state. An email sent to supporters from the state Democratic Party focused specifically on how the new health bill will affect the LGBT community.

“With 40% of people living with HIV relying on Medicaid, the bill’s deep cuts could literally be the difference between life and death,” the governor wrote in the email, which estimated that over 1 million LGBT individuals would lose health coverage under the new bill.

“You know how bad this bill is — now join us in doing something about it,” Cuomo added. “We can’t wait for November 2018. We’re kicking off a series of voter drives across the state and need your help to get it started.”

Jessica Proud, a State Republican Party spokeswoman, lashed back at the governor, saying that he had “tied himself to [House Democratic Leader] Nancy Pelosi’s hip.”

“Clearly he hasn’t gotten the memo that it’s why Democrats keep losing elections,” Proud said.
