Philando Castile family to get $3M settlement
Philando Castile’s family will receive $3 million in a settlement with St. Anthony, Minn., after a police officer fatally shot him during a routine traffic stop last year, according to Monday reports.
The city and lawyers representing Castile’s family issued a statement on the settlement, CNN reported.
“The death of Philando Castile is a tragedy for his family and for our community,” the statement says. “The parties moved expeditiously to resolve potential civil claims resulting from this tragedy in order to allow the process of healing to move forward for the Castile family, for the people of St. Anthony Village, and for all those impacted by the death of Philando Castile throughout the United States.”
{mosads}”No amount of money could ever replace Philando. With resolution of the claims the family will continue to deal with their loss through the important work of the Philando Castile Relief Foundation,” it continues.
The police officer, Jeronimo Yanez, was acquitted earlier this month of second degree manslaughter as well as two counts of intentionally discharging a firearm under circumstances that endanger the safety of another person.
Video captured by Yanez’s squad car dash camera shows him approaching Castile’s car to address an out tail light. Castile then warns Yanez that he has a firearm on him.
There is an exchange of words, before the officer yells, “Don’t pull it out!” and then fires his own weapon five times.
Castile’s death went viral after his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live.
Reynolds’ 4-year-old daughter was also present in the car during the shooting.
The video does not capture Castile’s actions inside the car, and some of their conversation is unintelligible.
