Donald Trump Jr. to CNN: ‘I’m shocked you can actually stand’ after controversies

Donald Trump Jr. jabbed at CNN on Thursday, saying he was surprised the network was still “standing” after an editorial fumble that led to the resignation of three top journalists.

The news network’s public relations account posted a tweet sympathizing with MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski after President Trump savaged the pair in a Thursday morning Twitter attack.

CNN, the network’s tweet read, stands with the morning show’s anchors.

Donald Trump Jr.’s barb at CNN followed a rocky week for the network that began last Friday, when CNN retracted a story that claimed a Senate committee was investigating a Russian bank with ties to a top Trump ally. 

The president and his aides quickly pointed to the retraction as evidence that CNN, which Trump has often disparaged as “fake news,” was conspiring to damage the Trump administration.

The episode continued on Tuesday when three top CNN journalists tied to the retracted story abruptly resigned. Throughout the week, Trump hurled a steady stream of admonishments at the country’s major news organizations, including CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post.

The president came under fire on Thursday, however, after unleashing a pair of tweets taking aim at Brzezinski, whom he dubbed “low I.Q. Crazy Mika,” and Scarborough, whom he labeled “Psycho Joe.”

But in a more personal and graphic attack, Trump also suggested that Brzezinski was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when she visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last year.

That post spurred immediate backlash across the political spectrum, with critics ripping Trump for his broadside against Brzezinski’s appearance and the personal nature of the insult.
