Ex-Watergate prosecutor: Trump sounds like Nixon

A former Watergate prosecutor says President Trump’s reaction to Russia news reminds her of former President Richard Nixon telling aides to say they can’t remember or recall something when testifying.

“Richard Nixon advised people to say ‘I can’t remember, I can’t recall.’ That’s exactly how he told them to testify,” Jill Wine-Banks said on MSNBC on Wednesday.

“And that’s perjury. If you remember something and you say you don’t remember … that’s a violation of the law and I’d say that’s where we’re heading with all the people testifying.”

{mosads}Wine-Banks pointed out that Attorney General Jeff Sessions also said “I don’t remember” to several questions when he publicly testified last month.

Trump said Wednesday that he would not have picked Sessions as his attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse himself from the investigations into Russian election interference.

That Sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the probe, Trump told The New York Times in an interview, is “very unfair to the president.”

“Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Trump said.

Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation in March after it was revealed that he did not disclose two meetings he had with the Russian ambassador during the course of the Trump campaign.
