Colbert: White House staff should ‘change the locks’ while Trump on vacation
Late-night host Stephen Colbert joked Friday that White House staff should “change the locks” while President Trump is away on his 17-day vacation to his private golf club.
The “Late Show” host blasted Trump for leaving on his extended vacation to New Jersey, saying, “He’s earned it … is a phrase that you don’t say about Donald Trump.”
Colbert also referenced the renovations the White House will undergo during Trump’s time away.

“It’s about damn time, I heard that place is a dump,” Colbert said, alluding to comments Trump reportedly made while once comparing the White House to his New Jersey golf club.
Work has begun to replace the West Wing’s 27-year-old heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Because of the frequency of use, the HVAC system’s usage age is pegged at around 84 years old.
The comedian joked about the repairs to the West Wing’s air conditioning system, saying the system really needed the repairs because “the previous president was simultaneously hotter and cooler.”
Other improvements that will be made to the White House during Trump’s vacation include work on the Navy mess kitchen, a restaurant in the West Wing run by the U.S. Navy, the building’s lower lobby, the information technology (IT) system and other “generic cosmetic upgrades.”
“While they’re making improvements to the White House, can I make one suggestion?” Colbert said. “Change the locks. Do it, now’s your chance!”
