Patrick Kennedy checks into medical facility
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) has checked himself into a medical facility.
The lawmaker, who has fought bouts with alcoholism and depression, issued a vague statement Friday morning saying he decided to seek treatment.
“I have decided to temporarily step away from my normal routine to ensure that I am being as vigilant as possible in my recovery,” Kennedy said.
“I hope that in some small way my decision to be proactive and public in my efforts to remain healthy can help remove the stigma that has served as a barrier for many Americans reluctant to get the help they needed,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy’s father, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), continues to fight brain cancer.
The younger Kennedy has previously battled bipolar disorder and an addiction to prescription drugs. He has used his experiences to become a leading advocate for mental health issues.
Further details on why the Democrat checked himself into a medical facility are unknown at this time.
