NC state lawmaker: Bring back the electric chair

A North Caroline state lawmaker wants to resume the use of the electric chair in executions, saying he would like to “make the chair great again.” 

“The chair was originally used to put inmates to death by electrocution. After North Carolina switched to executing inmates by lethal gas, the chair was converted and put to use in the gas chamber until the late 1990s,” state Rep. Justin Burr (R) wrote Wednesday on Facebook.

The electric chair was used in North Carolina from 1910 to 1938, according to the state’s Department of Public Safety. 

Lethal injection became North Carolina’s only method of execution in 1998 after a statutory amendment was signed. 

North Carolina last executed a prisoner in 2006.
