Report: Obama to hold first DNC fundraiser since leaving office

Former President Obama is reportedly set to hold his first fundraising event for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) since leaving the White House.

The event, which will take place in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 27, will help fund state parties and upcoming Virginia races, CNN reported on Friday.

The fundraiser marks Obama’s second political event since leaving office, the first being in July for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. 

While Obama has largely stayed out of politics since President Trump took office, he has made more political statements as of late. 

{mosads}The former president this week made his most aggressive statement since the end of his term, calling Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program “cruel” and “self-defeating.”

Obama’s fundraiser will come as welcome news to Democrats, who are seeking to make a dent in Republican majorities in the House and Senate in the 2018 midterm elections. 

The DNC has raised funds at a sluggish pace since Obama left office in January, bringing in $38.2 million in the first half of 2017, compared to the Republican National Committee’s $75.4 million haul during that same period.
