5.6M asked to evacuate in Florida ahead of Irma

More than 5 million people have been asked to evacuate in Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma, which is expected to make landfall this weekend.

The Associated Press reported Friday night that 5.6 million people – or more than a quarter of the state’s population – have been asked to evacuate as the Category 4 storm approaches the U.S.

Authorities in southern Florida have been warning residents for days about the approaching storm, which is expected to bring winds topping 155 miles per hour.

Evacuations are underway in the Miami-Dade area, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) earlier Friday warned that “all Floridians should be prepared to evacuate.”

“Do not put yourself or your family at risk,” Scott said.
