Spicer: No one should be surprised by Trump’s deals with Democrats
Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said President Trump’s recent dialogue with congressional Democratic leaders should take no one by surprise, calling the president “a deal maker.”
“I don’t think it’s a newsflash. This president is a dealmaker. He got things done. He made it very clear during the campaign that he was a CEO businessman that knew how to strike a deal when he saw and he’s going to do what’s in the best interest of this country when he can get a deal,” Spicer said on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends” on Friday.
{mosads}”Washington needs to wake up and understand that this is a guy who is going to make the best deal for the country when he can and if that’s with Republicans it’s going to be with Republicans, if it’s with Democrats it’s going to be with Democrats, if it’s with a bipartisan group of individuals, it’s going to be with them,” he continued.
Spicer’s comments come as the president faces heavy criticism from some conservatives for making deals with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the debt ceiling and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Some of Trump’s staunchest defenders appeared to have turned on the president after the talks on a DACA bill, including conservative commentator Ann Coulter and right-wing firebrand publication Breitbart, which referred to the president as “Amnesty Don.”
Conservative Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) warned that a deal to allow some immigrants in the country illegally to remain in the country would be a bridge too far for his supporters.
“Trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable, and disillusioned beyond repair. No promise is credible,” King said.
