Trump’s McCain attacks resurface after he tweets honoring POWs
President Trump proclaimed Friday as “National POW/MIA Recognition Day,” but Twitter users were quick to point out that he was less respectful toward one of America’s most famous former prisoners of war, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
“The members of our Armed Forces shine a light of freedom throughout the world, and as we celebrate our returning heroes, we also remember our heroes who never returned home,” Trump said in a statement.
“On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, our Nation recognizes all American prisoners of war and service members missing in action who have valiantly honored their commitment to this great country.”
NEVER forget our HEROES held prisoner or who have gone missing in action while serving their country.

Twitter users quickly resurfaced Trump’s 2015 comments on McCain, in which he made fun of the former GOP presidential nominee’s military service during the Vietnam War, which included more than five years as a captive of the North Vietnamese.
“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

For the life of me I’ll never understand how “I like people who weren’t captured” wasn’t the end of it. https://t.co/0WyndOacvU

Trump and McCain have maintained a testy relationship since the former entered the White House. McCain has been critical of Trump on issues ranging from immigration to transgender members of the military.
