Police began to receive calls about 11:15 am that shots were fired in Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, according to The Tennesssean.

Police identified the shooter as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson at a press conference Sunday night, according to CNN.

The Nashville Fire Department confirmed in a tweet that Samson was among those injured, who are mostly people over the age of 60.

Samson, who shot himself, is currently under police guard at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to Nashville Police’s public affairs manager Don Aaron.

All of the injured have been transported to hospitals.

Aaron added that one person is more seriously injured than the rest of the wounded.

The Fire Department is calling the shooting a mass casualty situation.

Aaron estimated there were roughly 50 people in the church at the time.

Aaron said Samson was wearing a type of ski mask at the time of the shooting and came from Rutherford County, Tenn.

Police say Samson pistol-whipped the church usher.

There is currently no known relationship between Samson and the congregation.
