Democrat senator: Trump sitting in ‘opulent golf resort’ attacking relief workers

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) blasted President Trump on Saturday for the president’s early morning series of tweets attacking the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, over the island’s response to Hurricane Maria.

Murphy charged that Trump was sitting “in his opulent golf resort attacking hurricane first responders” while thousands remain without electricity or drinking water on the island.

Trump criticized San Juan’s Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz on Twitter Saturday morning after Cruz gave an emotional press conference asking for aid amid what she called the Trump administration’s “inefficiency.”

“I will do what I never thought I was going to do. I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying. If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency,” she said Friday.

{mosads}Trump responded Saturday by accusing the mayor of listening to Democrats who told her to be “nasty” to the president.

“The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” Trump tweeted. “Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.”

“They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort,” he continued. “10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.”

Puerto Rico is recovering after two category 4 hurricanes, Maria and Irma, struck the island and left 3.4 million people without clean drinking water or electricity. Officials estimate power will not be fully restored on the island for up to six months.

Trump is spending the weekend at his golf club in New Jersey, but was slated to hold a series of phone calls Saturday related to relief after Hurricane Maria. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted Saturday that the president has received daily briefings about the situation from FEMA and Chief of Staff John Kelly.
