Kaepernick suggests report he would stand during anthem is a lie

NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick on Sunday appeared to dispute a report that he would stand during the national anthem if he was signed to an NFL team.

“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Winston S. Churchill,” Kaepernick quoted in a tweet on Sunday.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora told CBS Sports earlier Sunday that Kaepernick had said he would stand during the national anthem if he was signed to a NFL team.

La Canfora later backtracked from his earlier statements, saying that he and Kaepernick hadn’t discussed the issues and that he made his comments based on earlier reporting.

Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem last season to protest police brutality and racial injustice. He was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers at the time, but opted out of his contract at the end of the season.

Kaepernick’s girlfriend and radio host Nessa Diab also refuted the report in a tweet Sunday.

“The reports that Colin will stand for the anthem are completely false! He has never discussed this with anyone,” she wrote.

Kaepernick also shared Diab’s statement on Twitter.
