Pelosi: Allegations against Harvey Weinstein are ‘despicable’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday condemned film mogul Harvey Weinstein for the multiple allegations of sexual harassment against him, calling his actions “despicable.”

In a statement, the California Democrat condemned Weinstein’s attempts to “silence” his victims.

{mosads}“The news of Harvey Weinstein’s countless assaults on women and the clear efforts to intimidate his victims into silence are shocking. His despicable actions violate every standard of acceptable behavior,” Pelosi said.

“Every man who disrespects and attacks women must be held accountable,” she said.

An explosive investigation from The New York Times last week detailed decades of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Weinstein. The report also revealed that Weinstein has settled with at least eight women over related accusations.

Pelosi’s comments come days after other similar condemnations from top Democrats, many of whom were the recipients of major donations from the film producer over the years.

Last week, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) vowed to give Weinstein’s donations to his campaign to charities supporting women.

“Sen. Schumer is donating all of the contributions to several charities supporting women,” said Matt House, a spokesman for the Democratic leader.

Both Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Former President Barack Obama, along with former first lady Michelle Obama, also issued statements Tuesday.

“I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein,” Clinton said through a spokesman.

“The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior,” she said.

The Obamas in a joint statement said they were “disgusted” by the allegations.
