One World Trade Center to light up after New York attack

The One World Trade Center building in New York City will be lit red, white and blue Tuesday night in honor of the eight confirmed victims of a terrorist attack that occurred in downtown Manhattan earlier in the afternoon.

A statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) office stated that the tower would be lit Tuesday night per the governor’s orders.

“Governor Cuomo also directed that the One World Trade Center to be lit in red, white, and blue in honor of freedom and democracy,” the statement reads.

Eight people were killed and several others were injured when a truck plowed into a group of pedestrians on a bike path in lower Manhattan. Authorities have detained one suspect, 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov.

In a statement, President Trump said that the federal government would “provide its full support to the New York Police Department, including through a joint investigation” with the FBI after the attack.

The tower has been lit with the colors of the American flag as well as those of other nations in the past to commemorate victims of various national tragedies. In August, the tower was lit up with the colors of the Spanish flag in the wake of a terrorist attack in Barcelona that left 13 dead and dozens injured.
