Who is Carter Page?

Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, has been the subject of a series of headlines this week in the midst of deepening federal and congressional probes into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia’s election meddling. 

The New York Times reported on Friday that Page, who does not have a lawyer, revealed during testimony before the House Intelligence Committee that he had met with Kremlin officials during a July 2016 trip to Moscow. 

{mosads}Page also testified that he told then-campaign adviser and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) about his trip to Russia, according to CNN. 

The former Trump campaign adviser also did not rule out the possibility that he had been interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller as a part of the federal government’s Russia probe.

Page often takes part in televised interviews, and speculation has surrounded his ties to companies and government in eastern Europe. 

He left the Trump campaign after questions about his connections abroad began to surface, however, the president has defended Page, who was mentioned in the unverified dossier on the president.

Here are six things to know about Carter Page:

Page is a founder and managing partner of Global Energy Capital, according to the company’s website.

The former campaign adviser founded the private energy services company in 2008, which invests in companies that provide oil and gas drilling and production services. 

He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and served in the Navy for five years.

Page was a Trident Scholar and graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1993 before he went on to serve in the Navy. 

He worked for a wealth management firm in Russia

Page spent seven years working as an investment banker for Merrill Lynch in London, Moscow and New York. 

He spent three years in Moscow, where he spearheaded the opening of the city’s Merrill Lynch office. 

During his time at the firm, he helped broker key transactions with Russia’s state-run gas company Gazprom and Russia’s state-run electric power holding company RAO UES. 

He has expressed pro-Kremlin views 

Page praised Russia and criticized U.S. foreign policy in a series of articles for Global Policy magazine in 2014 and 2015.

Subject in FBI wiretap probe in 2013

Page was caught in the middle of an FBI wiretap investigation when a Russian operative, who was eventually charged, tried to recruit him. 

The FBI interviewed Page, but did not accuse him of wrongdoing in the probe.
