Cornyn: GOP is ‘re-grouping’

The GOP is in a rebuilding period and will come back stronger than ever in 2010, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said.

“We’re in a re-grouping period,” Conyn, Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) told MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer. “I think you’re going to be surprised” by the 2010 elections, he added.

Cornyn has been trying to make the best of Arlen Specter’s decision to switch parties. Writing on the blog Power Line, Cornyn argued Specter’s decision will take a burden off the party’s shoulders.

“[H]is departure likely spares Republicans from spending valuable resources in what would have been an expensive and divisive Republican primary–a primary battle that Specter appeared extremely unlikely to win,” Cornyn wrote. “Indeed, Specter cited recent polls showing him trailing former U.S. Representative Pat Toomey (R-PA) by more than 20 points as his main reason to bolt the Party.”

Cornyn added that a 60-seat majority will give Democrats no excuses for potential failures.
