Authorities file new charges against undocumented immigrant acquitted in Steinle case: report

Federal officials have filed new charges against the undocumented immigrant recently acquitted in the murder of Katie Steinle, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Officials filed new immigration and gun charges against Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, just days after he was acquitted of murder and manslaughter in the Steinle case.

Garcia Zarate had been charged in Steinle’s killing after she was fatally wounded in 2015 while walking on the San Francisco waterfront.

{mosads}Garcia Zarate is an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times ahead of the 2015 shooting. Opponents of so-called sanctuary cities have taken up the Steinle case to argue for stricter immigration laws.

He was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges late last month in the case, but was convicted on the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Justice Department had issued a warrant for Garcia Zarate’s arrest on Friday, claiming he had violated his supervised released.

President Trump pointed to Steinle’s death to push for stricter immigration laws during his presidential campaign, and decried the verdict in the trial as “disgraceful.”

“No wonder the people of our Country are so angry with Illegal Immigration,” Trump tweeted last week.
