Newspapers shed subscribers

Newspapers are losing subscribers at a record pace, according to new numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC).

On average, daily circulation fell 7% for the 395 papers measured, while the Sunday circulation dropped 5.3% for a larger group of 557 papers. The changes are measured from the same period last year.

The papers taking the biggest hits include the Boston Globe (-13.6%), New York Daily News (-14%) and the New York Post (-20%). The NY Times lost 3.5%, and the Washington Post dropped just over 1%.

USA Today, still with the nation’s highest circulation, dropped 7%.

The one bright spot was the Wall Street Journal, whose daily circulation increased by 0.6%.
