King Abdullah: It was torture

The United States engaged in torture, the King of Jordan said in an interview.

“From what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard, um, there are enough accounts to show that that is the case,” King Abdullah II told David Gregory in an interview set to air tomorrow.

Jordan is one of America’s key Arab allies. He met with President Obama in the White House last week, the first Arab leader to do so since Obama became President. Video is below, with full transcript after the jump.

GREGORY: Do you think the United States engaged in torture?

KING ABDULLAH: Well, from what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard, um, there are enough accounts to show that that is the case. Um, but there is still a major battle out there, and I think that America, and I think this is what President Obama is trying to do, is make sure the legal system America is known for is transparent to make sure that illegal activity–

GREGORY: That is an important point. You actually do believe that the United States engaged in torture.

KING ABDULLAH: From what I see on…the press, they show that there was illegal ways of dealing with detainees.
