FBI probing Pennsylvania shootings targeting police

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are probing whether a string of shootings in Harrisburg, Pa., on Friday constituted an act of terror. 

ABC News reported Saturday that federal authorities are investigating after 51-year-old Ahmed Aminamin El-Mofty allegedly opened fire on police officers in three different locations in the Pennsylvania capital on Friday.

One officer was injured in the shootings. El-Mofty was shot and killed in a confrontation with police.

The first shooting took place Friday afternoon outside the state capitol when El-Mofty allegedly fired on a Capitol Police officer, striking his cruiser, but leaving the officer unscathed. 

Roughly 30 minutes later, El-Mofty reportedly shot at another officer. He struck her once, but her injuries are not believed to be life threatening. 

After a police pursuit, El-Mofty began shooting at officers with two handguns, officials said. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect. 

Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said Friday that the investigation would determine if there were any links between the shootings and terrorism, according to ABC News. Marsico said that El-Mofty had recently returned to the U.S. from a trip to the Middle East.
