Poll: Most say US became less respected in the world in 2017

A majority of respondents in a new poll say the U.S. has become less respected in the world over the last year.

An Economist–YouGov poll found 52 percent of those surveyed say the U.S. became less respected in the world in the last year, while 21 said they think the U.S. became more respected in the world over the last year. Twenty-six percent think there was no change.

Among those who voted for 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton last year, 90 percent said they think the U.S. has become less respected in the last year.

{mosads}Of those who voted for President Trump, 60 percent say the world has become more respected, while 15 percent say it has become less respected and one-quarter say there has been no change.

The poll also found that about one-quarter of respondents think Trump has accomplished more than they expected during his first year in office.

Slightly more respondents, 29 percent, think Trump accomplished less than they expected since taking office, and 34 percent think the president has accomplished about what they expected.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 24 to 26 among 1,500 respondents. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.

The survey comes as Trump finishes out his first year in the White House. During his first year in office, Trump sought to promote an “America First” agenda.

He has struggled to fulfill some of his key campaign promises, including building a wall along the country’s southern border and the repeal and replacement of ObamaCare. Earlier this month, he signed a sweeping tax-reform bill into law, his first major legislative accomplishment.
