Florida shooting survivor proposes monthly walkouts until legislative action is taken

Florida school shooting survivor David Hogg is proposing school walkouts every month until Congress takes legislative action to prevent gun violence.

“The main way that I can see the momentum really continuing is if we had a walkout every 14th, until legislative action is taken in the United States Congress by these politicians that haven’t taken action for so long,” Hogg said during an interview on NBC’s “Today” show.

“So that we can stand up as Americans and fight for our lives when no one else will.”

{mosads}Hogg’s comments came on the day of the National School Walkout, which is taking place one month after a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., killing 17 people.

Hogg during the interview Wednesday called for people to stand up and speak out against these acts of violence.

“Now we are seeing action,” he said.

“We have gotten a bill passed in one of the most Republican states of America in less than three weeks … and that’s because of our actions.”

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) earlier this month signed into a law a measure imposing new restrictions on gun purchases in the state. The legislation raises the minimum age for purchasing firearms from 18 to 21 and imposes a three-day waiting period for most purchases of long guns.

Gun control has become a central issue in the country since the Florida school shooting as students demand lawmakers do more to keep their schools safe.

Students have also planned a march later this month in Washington, D.C., to rally against gun violence.
