New Zealand diplomat censured after tweeting Dems need to get their act together ‘or we will all die’
New Zealand’s second-ranking envoy to the United States was censured after she posted a tweet saying the Democratic Party must “get your shit together or we will all die,” The New York Times reported.
New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner to the U.S. Caroline Beresford posted tweets in response to an opinion piece by columnist Brent Budowsky in The Hill titled “A Sanders-Warren ticket could win big in 2020.”
“No it couldn’t. Please get your s–t together or we will all die,” she wrote, according to screenshots posted on the news website Newsroom.
{mosads}In another tweet responding to the same piece, she wrote: “They’ve learned nothing.”
In response, New Zealand’s foreign ministry censured Beresford. She has since made her Twitter account private and deleted the tweets.
A spokesman for New Zealand’s foreign minister, Winston Peters, said he was “confident the ministry is responding in an appropriate way,” according to the Times.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it had expectations that staff “maintain political neutrality and care in expressing personal opinion.”
“The ministry does not in any way endorse the content or tone of the tweets, which we note were deleted,” a spokeswoman said.
Beresford said in an email to Newsroom that she “realized very quickly” the tweets were “inappropriate” and deleted them.
