John Lewis to student gun protesters: ‘I will be with you all of the way’

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) urged students protesting gun violence on Wednesday to “never give up,” and to draw inspiration from the civil rights movement.

“I will be with you all of the way,” Lewis told the crowd gathered in front of the Capitol.

“So hang in there. Never give in, keep your eyes on the prize and you will have a great victory,” he added.

{mosads}Hundreds of students gathered in front of the Capitol to protest gun violence and school shootings. The rally was part of a national school walkout day during which students left classes in protest.

Lewis, a civil rights icon, received a particularly warm reception from students as he approached the microphone.

“I love you John Lewis,” one student shouted.

Lewis recalled his experiences in the civil rights movement, and told students they have an obligation to fight for what they think is right.

Students roared as Lewis told them he’d never taken money from the National Rifle Association (NRA), and had received an “F” from the organization.

“You know the NRA don’t like me,” Lewis said, prompting laughter and applause.

Students approached Lewis as he left the podium, with many thanking him for appearing at the rally.
