Illinois county declares itself a ‘sanctuary’ for gun owners

An Illinois county has adopted a resolution to declare itself a sanctuary for gun owners.

Effingham County’s Board passed a measure 8-1 on Monday that directs employees not to enforce any state laws that would “unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment,” The Effingham Daily News reported on Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office will be in control of decisionmaking, the Effingham County State’s Attorney Brian Kibler said.

The resolution is largely “symbolic,” Kibler said.

Sheriff Dave Mahon said that if a law passed by state legislators was viewed as potentially unconstitutional, he would consult with the state’s attorney and the legal counsel of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association before deciding what to do.

The resolution targeted a number of bills active in the General Assembly. 

One such bill was vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner (R). It would have required additional registration for gun shops.
