Police officers involved in Stephon Clark shooting return to work

The Sacramento Police officers who were involved in a shooting of an unarmed black man last month have returned to work. 

ABC News reported Friday that the officers, who have been on administrative leave, are back at work, but will not be in a patrol capacity. The names of the officers have not been released. 

The officers were placed on administrative leave after the March 18 shooting of Stephon Clark, 22. Officers were responding to a 911 call claiming that someone was breaking into cars. They chased Clark into the backyard of his grandmother’s house, where he was staying, and opened fire.

Officers said that they believed Clark was holding a gun. In fact, only a cellphone was found on him.

Clark’s death sparked widespread protests, demanding changes in how police use deadly force, particularly against minorities.

A family-commissioned autopsy of Clark’s body found that he had been shot eight times from behind or on his side. The findings apparently contradicted the police officers’ narrative, who said they felt threatened by Clark.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Clark’s brother, Stevante Clark, was arrested on Thursday for making criminal threats, felony assault, felony vandalism and abusing the 911 emergency line, ABC News reported.
