Asylum seeker will be reunited with son after suing Trump admin: report
A Guatemalan woman who sued the Trump administration claiming that her son had been taken from her at the border while she was seeking asylum will reportedly soon be reunited with him.
Justice Department lawyers made the assurance Thursday just hours before a scheduled hearing on a request by the woman’s lawyers over a restraining order requiring the 7-year-old’s immediate release, Politico reported.
The woman, Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia, claimed in the lawsuit that made headlines earlier this week that she was allowed to speak to her son only once on the phone and that officials wouldn’t tell her where he was being held, beyond that he was in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement in Phoenix.

Mejia-Mejia was reportedly released from custody last week after she posted bond while awaiting her immigration hearing, but alleged in the lawsuit that she was unable to receive any further information regarding her child or how to reunite with him.
Meija-Meija’s lawsuit arrived amid outcry over the Trump administration’s controversial “zero-tolerance” policy as more visuals and accounts from inside immigrant detention centers emerged, drawing considerable backlash from both Republicans and Democrats.
The measure, which sought prosecution for any adult crossing the southern border illegally, resulted in the separation of more than 2,300 children from their families since it was implemented in early May.
President Trump ended the separations with an executive order on Wednesday, but it’s remains unclear how that will effect children already separated from their parents or guardians.
