Hundreds of neo-Nazis marching to commemorate the death of a top Nazi figure were met with counterprotests in Berlin over the weekend.

Reuters reported that about an equal number of far-right marchers and counterprotesters clashed at Saturday’s event, and that at least one police officer was injured.

{mosads}A Berlin police spokesman told Reuters that some counterprotesters threw stones and bottles at the neo-Nazi marchers. Many of the marchers carried Third Reich flags, and one group carried a banner reading, “I regret nothing: National Socialists Berlin.”

The rally marked the 31st anniversary of the death of Rudolf Hess, a top Adolf Hitler deputy who killed himself in prison while serving a life sentence handed down at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

About 2,300 police officers were deployed to prevent violence at the event. Photos show counterprotesters carrying some signs reading “No place for Nazis” and others in support of Muslim immigrants in Germany.

German news outlet Deutsche Welle reported that counterprotesters drove a separate group of neo-Nazi marchers out of Berlin’s Spandau district.
