Parkland’s David Hogg defends calling Pelosi ‘old’

Parkland, Fla., shooting survivor and gun control activist David Hogg defended calling House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) “old” in a recent interview, saying Democrats need young people in leadership.

“I said ‘Pelosi is old,'” he wrote Tuesday on Twitter. “Trump is old. Hatch is old. Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke are both in the younger side of American leadership. We can go younger. Dems need to allow young people to seize leadership opportunities like the republicans have with people like Rubio, Ryan etc.”

In another tweet on Wednesday, he wrote that he doesn’t endorse age limits and said “we need experience and wisdom in our leadership.”

“But, we also need a representative government, which means younger leaders need to be given a chance,” he added.

Hogg said in an interview with New York magazine’s Daily Intelligencer that Republicans are successful because they empower young people such as Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.).

“Older Democrats just won’t move the f— off the plate and let us take control,” he said in the interview. “Nancy Pelosi is old.”

Hogg said in the same interview with New York magazine that he plans to run for Congress when he’s 25. Hogg rose to prominence after the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead, propelling him to advocacy and becoming a leading voice in the gun control movement.
