Fire near Statue of Liberty forces thousands to evacuate off Liberty Island

Thousands of spectators were evacuated by the National Park Service after a fire broke out Monday near the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Liberty Island and the statue were evacuated after three propane tanks caught fire at a construction site, ABC News reported.

{mosads}Roger Sakowich, the Manhattan borough commander for the New York Fire Department, told reporters that boats transported nearly 3,400 people off Liberty Island to nearby Ellis Island.

The Statue of Liberty reopened later Monday afternoon, ABC News reported.

One worker reportedly sustained a non-life-threatening injury.
