Ruth Bader Ginsburg voices support for #MeToo movement ahead of Kavanaugh hearing
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg threw her support behind the #MeToo movement a day before the highly anticipated U.S. Senate hearing into sexual misconduct allegations brought against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Speaking to first-year law students at Georgetown University, Ginsburg said she was “cheered on” by the #MeToo movement, one of the most popular movements against sexual harassment and assault across the globe, Reuters reported.
“Every woman of my vintage has not just one story but many stories, but we thought there was nothing you could do about it – boys will be boys – so just find a way to get out of it,” the 85-year-old said on Wednesday.
{mosads}Ginsburg went on to commend the momentum of the national movement, which has served as a precedent for others combatting sexual harassment across a number of industries.
“So it was one complaint and then one after another the complaints mounted,” Ginsburg continued, according to Reuters. “So women nowadays are not silent about bad behavior.”
The news agency noted that Ginsburg did not mention Kavanaugh by name during the event nor the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct.
Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, were scheduled to testify under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
So far, Kavanaugh is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, each of which he has denied.
President Trump has also pushed back on allegations against Kavanaugh and on Wednesday called the judge “one of the highest quality people I’ve ever met” during a press conference.
