Dem lawmaker mocks conservative activist as a ‘mansplainer’ after criticism of Taylor Swift

“Mansplainers gonna ‘splain, ‘splain, ‘splain, ‘splain, ‘splain,” Swalwell tweeted, referencing lyrics from Swift’s popular song “Shake It Off.”

Swalwell’s tweet was in response to a tweet from Turning Point USA founder and president Charlie Kirk, who blasted Swift’s decision to support former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen’s (D) bid for the Senate against Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).

“Hey ⁦@taylorswift13⁩ before you endorse a candidate maybe you should learn something about the candidates,” Kirk tweeted. “You have no idea what you are talking about… Marsha is a strong woman who will be the next US Senator from Tennessee.” 

Swift broke her career-long silence on politics to support Bredesen, who is battling Blackburn to succeed the retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). 

{mosads}“As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post. “I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives.”

She also urged her fans to register to vote, saying that citizens should educate themselves “on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.” 

Bredesen is in a tight race with Blackburn in a state won by President Trump in the last presidential election.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report currently lists the race as “toss-up.” An aggregation of polls by RealClearPolitics shows Blackburn with a 2-point lead.
