Law students walk out of class to protest against Kavanaugh

Droves of law students walked out of class in New York on Wednesday, one day after Justice Brett Kavanaugh heard his first cases on the Supreme Court, to protest his confirmation.

“There’s a lot of rage now all across the political spectrum,” Justine Medina, a Brooklyn Law School student who helped organized the demonstration, told The Washington Post.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court last week prompted public outrage after multiple allegations of sexual assault were brought against him and his combative testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in denying the accusations.

{mosads}His embattled nomination sparked protests from thousands of law professors and students nationwide. After his testimony before the Senate, nearly 1,000 female faculty members at law schools around the country signed onto a letter opposing his nomination to the Supreme Court, arguing the judge lacked “the requisite judicial temperament” to sit on the nation’s highest court.

“We are in the middle of a national emergency,” students who organized the demonstration on Wednesday wrote in a letter seen by the Post.

“We do not recognize Kavanaugh as a legitimate member of the United States Supreme Court,” the organizers said as they called on their peers to walk out of classes from Wednesday through Friday.

“We demand that anyone seeking to be elected to Congress in November commits to impeaching Kavanaugh to protect any semblance of rule of law and the people of our communities,” the letter continued.

Though some students were unable to participate in the protest because they weren’t able to miss class, other students shared photos on social media showing New York University School of Law and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law students joining the demonstration.
