German police probing suspicious letter sent to US Embassy

Police in Berlin said Thursday that they are investigating a letter sent to the U.S. Embassy there by a man who had previously sent threats and a white powder to the embassy, according to The Associated Press.

U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Tamara Sternberg-Greller told the AP that the “suspicious” letter was received but didn’t comment beyond that.

“We received another suspicious envelope and immediately turned it over to the German police,” she said.

{mosads}Valeska Jakubowski, a spokeswoman for Berlin police, told the AP that the embassy noticed the letter was sent from the same man who was charged with disturbing the peace earlier this year after sending white powder to the embassy.

Police told the AP in August that they were investigating two threatening letters with white powder that had been sent to the U.S. and Israel embassies in Berlin. Police also told the AP at the time that they determined the powder was not dangerous. 

The AP reported that the charges against the man were dismissed because he was ruled unfit for trial.

The latest letter sent by the man doesn’t appear to have been a crime, Jakubowski told the AP, noting that it did not include a threat.
