Van Jones calls election results ‘heartbreaking’

CNN’s Van Jones on Tuesday called the results of the midterm elections “heartbreaking,” saying he believes Democrats may still have a feeling of “helplessness” come Wednesday.

Speaking on CNN, Jones added he expected voters would reject “hatred and division” but said it didn’t appear that was happening.

“This is heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking. The hope has been that the antibodies would kick in — that this sort of infestation of hatred and division would draw a response from the American people, really in both parties, to say ‘no’ and ‘no more,'” he said.

“That does not seem to be happening tonight. It’s not a blue wave, it’s still a blue war. We’ve got to continue the fight forward. I think that sense of helplessness that has really fueled a lot of this outrage and outpouring tomorrow from Democrats may still be there tomorrow, even if we have the House,” he added.

Jones’s comments came as Democrats’ hopes of a wave in House elections appeared to be fading Tuesday night, even as they were likely to regain control of the lower chamber.

Meanwhile, Republicans were on track to keep control of the Senate and possibly add to their majority following the victory of GOP businessman Mike Braun over Sen. Joe Donnelly (Ind.). Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) has also been holding a slim lead over Sen. Bill Nelson (D) in that state’s Senate race.

It hasn’t been all bad news for Democrats in the Senate, however, with Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D) locked in a tight race with incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) staving off West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey in that state.
