Suspected French gunman killed by police

French police said Thursday that the main suspect in Tuesday’s shooting at a popular Christmas market in Strasbourg, France, was killed in a police operation.

Cherif Chekatt, 29, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in a building just over a mile away from the location of Strasbourg’s market, sources told Reuters.

Three people were killed and more than a dozen others injured in the shooting Tuesday at the Christmas market.{mosads}

Chekatt’s parents and two brothers were still in custody Thursday, Reuters reports. It is unknown if the 29-year-old suspect had help in the attack, but Chekatt spent roughly 48 hours on the run following Tuesday’s attack.

Around 700 police officers were involved in the manhunt to find Chekatt following the attack, Reuters reported.

Chekatt was known to European authorities, as he spent considerable time in prison for a series of criminal charges including robberies across several countries.

It is thought that Chekatt was radicalized by Islamic teachings while serving time, according to French authorities.

Paris’s Eiffel Tower went dark in honor of the victims Wednesday night, and the U.S. State Department issued a statement condemning “in the strongest terms this horrific attack” and adding that “our thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected.”
